POPULAR GUIDE – How to Start a Profitable MPESA Agent Business – Complete Guide 2019
Before we begin, I would like to mention a few rather obvious things. First of all, to start using MPESA, you have to register your Safaricom line with the service. This is not done automatically when you buy a Safaricom line.
The good news is, you can register for FREE at any MPESA agent outlet. If any MPESA agent charges you for registration, you should contact Safaricom immediately.
I know this information is commonplace but for the sake of people who are not familiar with MPESA or Safaricom line registration, we will go over it one more time.
How to Register for MPESA in Kenya 2019
MPESA registration is exclusively done by an MPESA/Safaricom agent. It is not something you can do on your own. First of all, you need a Safaricom line. You can either replace your old line or buy a new Safaricom line.
Most MPESA agents also sell Safaricom lines so you can register it as soon as you buy it.
To register a Safaricom line, you will to provide the following information:
- Full real names
- Date of birth
- Original national ID/ Alien ID/ Diplomatic ID/ Passport/Military ID card or any other relevant document.
If the registration is successful, both you and the agent will receive a confirmation message from Safaricom. You will then be required to activate your account. You will be given a 4-digit start key which you will use as your initial PIN and change it during activation.

How to Activate Your MPESA Account
After registering, you will still need to activate your MPESA account in order to start using it. You can activate the account on your own.
To do this, follow the following very simple steps
- Go to MPESA
- Select ‘Activate’ or ‘Wezesha’
- Enter the 4-digit number provided by Safaricom
- Create a new unique 4-digit PIN number. Do not show the agent or anyone else your MPESA PIN!
- Enter your NEW PIN again to confirm it.
- Enter you ID number. Should be the same that was used to register your Safaricom line.
- Complete and updated MPESA menu will be send on your phone together with a ‘Secret Word’. Tap on ‘OK’ to complete registration. The secret word is unique to you only and should not be shared with anyone else.
After you activate your account, you can start using MPESA services. Keep in mind that you can only send up to KSh. 140,000 via MPESA in a day. A single transaction is limited to KSh. 70,000 so that means you will have to send the money twice to achieve the daily threshold.
The minimum amount you can withdraw via MPESA in a day is Ksh. 50
